Certificate of Basic Chinese for Non-Chinese Speakers
Course Design |
All courses focus on the
practical use of Putonghua for communication. On completing the Certificate, students should be
able to take the Basic Level test of the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi.
The Pinyin system, which is used throughout the Certificate programme, is introduced in the first course, EL071W. The second course, EL072W, introduces basic Chinese writing and the character system, and in the later courses reading and writing of Chinese characters are stressed in addition to listening and speaking skills. |

E-learning Mode
All the courses are delivered online, making use of multimedia (e.g. video, audio and other interactive components). Learners can practise pronunciation, record what they say and check this against a demonstration audio recording. There are also many exercises with feedback to learners. Where necessary, simple Chinese grammar and cultural aspects are introduced.
While all the courses contain self-instructional web-based learning material, learners are also supported by real-time online tutorials with tutors who are qualified and experienced Putonghua instructors. In addition, our e-learning platform allows learners and tutors to conduct asynchronous discussion. |
Programme Structure
To obtain the Certificate of Basic Chinese for non-Chinese Speakers, students need to complete 30 credits as follow:

Students who have no knowledge of Chinese are advised to start with EL071W. Students may take individual courses.
Entry Requirement
There is no entry requirement for this programme except that learners should be proficient in English as English will be used for all explanation.
Duration of study The University adopts a credit system with course starting in April and October every year. One 3 credits course will last 12 weeks. In normal progress, students are advised to take two 3-credit courses each semester and will take around two and a half years to complete the certificate.
